Science Writing Resources
Undergraduates in the sciences do a wide range of course-related writing. The UWC works with over 1,100 Natural Sciences majors each year, on such writing projects as:
- Lab notebooks
- Poster presentations
- Lab reports
- Essay exams
- Oral presentations
- Graduate and medical school Statements of Purpose
- Research resumes
- Conference papers
- Research paper summaries
- Honors theses
- Scholarship applications
- Job and internship cover letters
- Research Proposals
Despite the unique kinds of writing done in biology, chemistry, ecology, marine sciences, and related fields, few college writing centers publish resources to help science students. The UWC is currently seeking grant funding to both search out the best existing open-access materials, and to produce new science writing resources. We can’t wait to share the final results with you. In the meantime, we’ve compiled a short list of featured resources, which we hope you will find helpful:
Lab Reports
- LabWrite (an interactive writing tool developed by researchers at North Carolina State University).
Research Resumes and CVs
- Download sample biology resume (chronological organization)
- Download sample chemistry resume (functional organization)
- “Preparing your Curriculum Vitae (advice and sample CVs from Career Services at the University of Texas’s School of Natural Sciences)
Citation (American Psychological Association format)
- APA Formatting and Style Guide (general APA guidelines, from Purdue’s Online Writing Lab)
- APA Overview and Workshop (an overview of APA style and where to find help with various APA resources)
Please feel free to share other useful open-access materials you have found, and any suggestions for science writing topics you wish we would cover, by emailing us at: coordinator@uwc.utexas.edu.
